Adjunct professors make about $25/classroom hour, maybe 6 hours a week, called in when there's high demand for some course and not otherwise hired. Cheap labor, sort of like outsourcing. Tenured and tenure-eligible faculty consider them scabs.
I was offered adjunct faculty "opportunities," and I laughed.
It must be hard to be outright fired as an adjunct professor rather than just not called.
And yes, people who write such things are depraved.
